Toshiba 去年 12 月 3 日正式宣布成功收购 SSD 大厂 OCZ ,不少业界及用家也对 OCZ 未来路向、改变及发展机遇均十分关注,到底 OCZ 被购併后会如何经营,同时 Toshiba 又会为 OCZ 带来什么冲击 ? HKEPC 特别邀请 OCZ 全球行销副总 Tobias Brinkmann 进行专访,并对 OCZ 有关发展进行一一解答。
OCZ 早年以推出记忆体模组、电源器等产品广为用家认知,并于 2008 年率先推出 SSD 固态硬碟,成为业界首批踏入 SSD 产业的厂商之一,而且更曾是市场上最多 SSD 用家使用的品牌之一,可惜近年因种种因素,以及受其他产品业务拖累而于去年面临破产危机,最终于去年 12 月 3 日正式被 Toshiba 购併,今后 OCZ 将受惠全球 NAND Flash 大厂 Toshiba 的支援,全力专注于储存装置事业上,对于 OCZ 未来的发展方向, HKEPC 特别邀请 OCZ 全球行销副总 Tobias Brinkmann 进行专访。

记者﹕你好 Tobias, 很高兴能跟你进行访问。Toshiba 收购 OCZ 后,两者将如果配合发展及运作 ?
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕OCZ Storage Solutions is part of the Toshiba Group but will operate as a separate entity. Our goal is to grow our market share across various segments and as part of the Toshiba Group, we have everything in place just do to that.
OCZ was among the very first companies to launch a consumer SSD back in 2008. Since then we have established a large IP and patent portfolio both through in house development and acquisitions.
Our Barefoot 3 controller is one, if not the highest performing controller on the market, especially when it comes to sustained performance.What we have been missing in the recent past is the direct access to NAND which you need in the SSD market today in order to stay competitive and position yourself as a relevant player.There is no doubt that we are going to see the market consolidate further in the near future and as part of Toshiba I am confident we are going to grow and be one of the strong brands in the SSD space.
Toshiba will continue its own development, production and marketing of Toshiba branded SSDs while the new company, OCZ Storage Solutions, will also continue to sell its own OCZ branded SSD products through its own well established global sales channels
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕OCZ Storage Solutions 现在是 Toshiba 集团旗下的子公司之一,但我们会如同一般独立资金的公司运作一样自由。基于 Toshiba 的集团力量,我们的目标仍然是希望能提高我们的市场率,我们将会集中所有的力量来达成这个目标。
OCZ 在 2008 年时可以说是市场上最早发表 SSD 产品的少数公司之一,同时我们也掌握了许多的 SSD 专利技术的价值,相较许多竞争对手来说,我们更能够提早进入完全自主研发跟生产的专精领域。
我们的 Barefoot 3 主控制器就是其中一个代表,让我们能够在高速传输的主控制器对决中获得比其他主控制器更好的效能优势。但是我们并没有快闪记忆体的生产以及供货的完全掌握,我们在被 Toshiba 併购前也面临到快闪记忆体大缺货的状况,虽然竞争对手也有同样问题,不过像是一些具备生产快闪记忆体晶圆以及 SSD 产品的公司来说,这是它们在前段时间的最大优势。现在我们拥有了来自于 Toshiba 快闪记忆体的直接火力支援,结合我们所有的主控制器技术,我相信会让我们在 SSD 市场上更有竞争力。

Reporter ﹕What is the strength and opportunities come with the acquisition?

Tobias Brinkmann ﹕We now have all four pillars that will enable us to grow market share: a market leading in-house controller, application software, firmware and direct access to NAND.
The SSD market is one of the fastest growing segments in the IT industry today. According to analysts the market size will be over $23 billion by 2017 so having that direct access to NAND will be a major competitive advantage.
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕我们综合来说现在有四大优势 : 第一是领先同业的主控制器技术,第二是针对企业应用的套装软体,第三是自己撰写的韧体,加入 Toshiba 之后,第四点就是直接快闪记忆体的货源供应。
SSD 市场在 IT 领域来说是一个非常快速成长的市场,根据市场分析,在 2017 年的时候,整体市场规模将会超过 $23 亿美金的产值,所以在这之前,能够被 Toshiba 收购,等于比起同业更是优先掌握了快闪记忆体的优势,这应该是最大的正面好处。
Reporter ﹕Will it change the overall SSD market? (e.g. Toshiba turns into maturity stage in short time, vertical integration of the products line, attractive in OCZ patented technology? NEW OCZ’s competitiveness, etc.)

Tobias Brinkmann ﹕Over the past year we have already seen a market consolidation both in the consumer and enterprise space. The SSD market continues to experience extraordinary growth and I agree with analysts from IDC and Gartner that there will be only a few brands in the SSD market. There are only a few “brands” out there that have access to a NAND fab, and even fewer that have made the investment to bring up in house controller technology. As the NAND continues to evolve the need for technology that takes advantage of all the features and unlocks the full potential of next generation NAND will be even more key. We believe that in this regard we can offer a differentiated highly compelling solution.
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕早在过去几年我们早就已经预见在消费级和企业级市场上的一些风向, SSD 市场将会经历许多产业已经经历过的所谓成长期、停滞期、精品化期等等的过程,我个人也非常同意那些市调机构像是 Gartner 或者是 IDC 所做的分析,最后大者恆大的结果,只会让几家 SSD 品牌留下来,这些留下来的 SSD 品牌都会有一个决定性的要素就是掌握快闪记忆体晶圆的货源,甚至有些品牌是同时也具备了主控制器研发以及专利的技术在手。毕竟需求只会越来越大,但是快闪记忆体的产能还是属于有限的,更不要说那些尚未转换到 SSD 产品的潜在客户。我们相信 Toshiba 这次的併购对于我们来说绝对是利大于弊,我们因此而可以提供更完整的 SSD 解决方案给客户。
Reporter ﹕As a Toshiba group company, what is the change on the objectives and strategies? (e.g. price strategies, R&D, new product development, etc.)

Tobias Brinkmann ﹕As I mentioned previously with the direct access to NAND we are obviously going to be more competitive. When it comes to R&D it is a major advantage to be able to work together and get insight on the NAND technology itself which you are not able to in such detail as a regular vendor of a fab. On the product development side we are going to continue to develop our own controllers but also leverage some of the Toshiba products which will be sold under the OCZ brand.
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕如同我之前所说的,快闪记忆体货源的掌握,能够让我们在成本上面获得更好的优势跟控制,在未来的产品定价上面一定会比同业有更大的空间去操作。举例来说很多 SSD 品牌只是贴牌,价格跟利润其实都控制在代工厂上面,并没有如同我们现在有的成本控制来的好,我们相信我们完成合併之后的价格策略绝对会令消费者满意。在产品研发方面,我们当然会持续开发我们自主的主控制器,但也有可能在未来会有 Toshiba 的产品使用我们开发的主控制器。
Reporter ﹕What is the diversification on the product line and which segment will target for?
记者﹕OCZ 未来产品线的多样性与应用将如何发展 ?
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕Our goal is to grow our market share in the consumer segment and continue to increase our footprint in the enterprise space as well.
Being a fully integrated organization with our own controller, firmware, software suite and direct access to NAND flash will enable us to achieve these goals.
With our Vertex and Vector series on the consumer side we are targeting the mainstream and high-end market while our upcoming RevoDrive which will be based on 19nm Toshiba and our own controller is tailored for the workstation and entry-level server market.
Our comprehensive portofolio of flash-based hardware and software solutions on the enterprise side address the SMB market under which we categorize servers, Database Optimization, Data Warehousing and IT Application.
On the top end of the market we are also targeting Enterprise and OEM clients – Data Centers, Servers, Tier1 Storage and Embedded Deployments.
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕我们的目标是继续扩大我们的产品市场佔有率在消费级产品线上,以及打开我们在企业级市场的知名度,因此我们有的主控制器、韧体、套装软体以及快闪记忆体资源,会让我们更早达成这些目标。
在产品线上面,我们有 Vertex 以及 Vector 两大产品线,提供了消费级主流市场的基本选择,在高端市场上面我们即将会有全新的 Revodrive 系列推出,搭载了 19nm 的 Toshiba 快闪记忆体以及我们自有的主控制器,能够满足个人工作站、以及入门伺服器的应用。
我们的企业级产品线上面,当然也会有全系列的硬体 SSD 产品,另外我们针对几种常见的企业级应用也会推出专用的套装软体来对应,我们针对中小型企业的应用像是邮件伺服器、资料库优化、资料储存以及各种 IT 应用都有适合的软硬体整合套装产品。
在大型企业级用户以及 OEM 客户,如资料库中心、伺服器研发,大型储存以及嵌入式系统也同样是我们的目标客户。
Reporter ﹕Will the acquisition affect the products and services of global and Hong Kong market?(Product Warranty, distributor)
记者﹕是次收购会否对香港市场的产品及服务产生影响 ? ( 产品保养範围、代理商 )
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕Toshiba acquired the company’s assets and not the liabilities, but we are pleased that the new organization is able to continue to support existing customers with current SSD products. This supports the vast majority of consumers and all enterprise customers as our top volume products like the Vertex, Vector SATA and RevoDrive PCIe SSDs all continue to be supported. The Agility Series is already on the tail end of the lifecycle and we are able to provide one more year of support for this series. All OCZ Storage Solutions products launched after the acquisition, as well as any future products, will come with warranty support.
For the Hong Kong market in general including our channel partners and end customers, the acquisition has an immediate positive effect in terms of our availability and competitiveness of both our client and enterprise solutions.
We have a strong network of channel partners which have supported us well in the past and we look forward to continuing our relationship and grow the business together.
Tobias Brinkmann ﹕Toshiba 併购了整家公司的资产,虽然并非是全部概括既受,不过我们新的管理组织阶层还是会继续针对既有客户继续保持原本的产品与技术等服务内容,这说明了大部份的消费级和企业级客户们的服务都不会有甚么改变,在我们贩卖最多的 Veretx 、 Vector 以及 RevoDrive PCIe 的 SSD 产品线上仍然维持原本的服务内容,而 Agility 系列的的产品线原本就已经快要到产品生命週期截止的状态,因此我们将会继续提供延长一年的保固周期。之后以 OCZ Storage Solutions 新公司名称推出的产品也是当然会继续享有产品与技术的服务。
针对香港市场是我们在亚太区消费级和企业级同时兼具的状况下,併购所带来的影响也是会立即产生的,我们在香港市场有非常好的合作伙伴以及贩售管道,当然我们会继续保持原有的服务,并期待未来在 SSD 市场上能够拿下更多的生意机会。
